Difference between B-VCA and VOL-VCA
B-VCA and VOL-VCA are both VCA diplomas, but they are for different jobs. The short answer: if you do the work on site yourself, you need B-VCA. If you also lead other people, you need VOL-VCA.

B-VCA stands for Basic Safety VCA. It is for workers who do hands-on work in a place with risks: a building site, a factory, an installation or a warehouse. You learn to recognise the risks and how to work safely, for yourself and for your colleagues.
VOL-VCA: for supervisors
VOL-VCA stands for Safety for Operational Supervisors. It is for foremen, team leaders, site managers and other supervisors who also do the work themselves. Besides the B-VCA material, it is about your role: you carry out workplace inspections, hold toolbox meetings, make a task risk analysis and step in when the work is not safe.
The difference in the exam
- B-VCA: 40 questions in 60 minutes, pass mark 64.5 percent
- VOL-VCA: 60 questions in 60 minutes, pass mark 64.5 percent
- In VOL-VCA, more questions are about legislation, consultation, inspections and accident investigation
The question types are the same in both exams: questions with one or more correct answers, yes/no statements, matching questions and order questions. In VOL-VCA, the situations are often written from the point of view of the supervisor.
Which diploma do you need?
Not sure? Ask your employer, your employment agency or your client. They know which diploma your job requires. With a VOL-VCA diploma you may also do work that requires B-VCA, but not the other way round.
For both diplomas you can practise with five full practice exams in the app. B-VCA in nineteen languages, VOL-VCA in Dutch, English, German and French.
